Make handmade letterpress prints to celebrate the spring holiday!
Contained within the process of committing words to print, there is a necessary function to make final choices with the text. Choices of specific words, punctuation, and if poetry; where to break the line. Handling individual letters that comprise words puts the writer in a meditative mindset that can link brain activity to free association, and direct transmission of the "voice" in a wholly unique way.
Through this introductory class in setting type and the resulting printing choices regarding moveable type, I hope that students can develop their writing into a physical manifestation of their deepest thoughts. There is a long running tradition of the Poet & Printer from Blake to William Everson. This course will point the student to selected readings by these artists who make internal thoughts into visible objects.
