Fiction Workshop with Jonathan Franzen

In this virtual fiction workshop, celebrated author Jonathan Franzen will conduct a workshop for novelists. This workshop is open to writers who have a novel project in progress.

Jon will work with up to 12 writers in this 3 hour course. The first part of the course will be an instructor led discussion of novel writing. In the next part of the course participants will each describe their novel project and Jon will give feedback. With time permitting there will be generative writing exercises to finish the course.

The registration fee is $150 for the workshop only, or $175 for the workshop plus a signed copy of Jon’s recent novel Crossroads.

Upon registration, participants will receive a welcome email with a Zoom link and more information including handouts from Jon’s workshop assistant, who will also be available to answer any questions and provide technical assistance.

This workshop is for writers with a novel in progress. Participants will be required to submit a description of their novel project in advance. Participants who do not have a description of their novel in progress will not be enrolled.


Jonathan Franzen is the author of five novels, including The Corrections, Freedom, and Crossroads, and five works of nonfiction, most recently Farther Away and The End of the End of the Earth, all published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. He lives in Santa Cruz, California.

The Corrections was the winner of the 2001 National Book Award for fiction;
Franzen's other honors include a 1988 Whiting Writers' Award, Granta's Best Of Young American Novelists (1996), the Salon Book Award (2001), the New York Times Best Books of the Year (2001), and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize (2002).
