BEST AMERICAN ESSAYS 2016

Each year Houghton Mifflin publishes a collection of the top ten best American essays with a list of a hundred other notable essays and nonfiction. This year’s collection, edited by Jonathan Franzen, is an anthology of the best essays and creative nonfiction first published in magazines and journals in 2015. “Of Human Carnage”, by Richard Lange from the Catamaran Winter 2015 issue, has been included in the top ten Best American Essays and reprinted in the anthology. Of the 100 other notable essays and nonfiction of 2015 listed, Catamaran memoirs “California Girl” by Alison Townsend, and”Her Boyhood” by Alyson Lie, both from our Fall 2015 issue,  and “The Ontology of Hermeneutics” by Christopher Buckley, from our Spring 2015 issue.

Best american science and nature writing

Each year Houghton Mifflin publishes a collection of the Best American Science and Nature Writing. This year’s collection was edited by Amy Stewart, and publishes the best science and nature writing published in magazines and journals in 2015. Two pieces first published in Catamaran were included in the list of notable works. These were “The Great Awakening” by Wes Jackson, published in our Spring 2015 issue, and “Guest of the Great White” by Jason Wake Smith, published in our Summer 2015 issue.
